A
personal exploration of the beginning foundations of Chantelle's
alternative theory of the functioning of time. Abstract imagery
creates a storyline set against a philosophical narrative,
concerned with existential issues of reality; and the deep personal
importance to discover more when faced by the meaningless death
of a complete stranger.
"I was researching and enjoying the earliest films of some of the world's most successful directors, and it made me think to make "Currents" viewable. Many people have found it a curious and inspired work. This is my first film production that I created when pregnant and beginning my film BAA program. I knew that the films in the rest of my life were going to be focused on strong narrative stories, so I saw it as a rare chance to experiment abstractly, and to get out some heartfelt and important concepts that may be lost in traditional cinema. This was the work that first brought the interest of many people to me, including Dodi Fayed ("Chariots of Fire", "The Scarlet Letter"). I experimented with the use of audio over the visual image, using lengthy black segments that actually worked really well in the theatre screening. It was kind of fascinating to glance at the audience at that point, and see them staring at the dark screen listening intently. There are many layers that would only reveal in commentary, for example the moment when there is a scream in an alley way, I had placed the camera in one of the highest crime areas of the city, to see if anyone would come. No one did. My film making skills are far beyond this first endeavor, but I am still happy with the message in it. Enjoy."
