When I first studied directing, we delved into ritual performance, which is the origins of filmmaking through storytelling. I can have the most profound thought or invention, but if I cannot communicate it to others, that wisdom dies with me. Storytelling is one of the unique qualities that has defined humanity, and the role of the filmaker is one of tremendous importance.

For example, when a screenwriter brings their work to me, I see it as the culmination of a person's lifetime of hardship and triumph, placed onto perhaps a hundred pages of perhaps excellent expression.
